Both these birds tend to creep along branches and up and down trunk of trees looking for insects, and they would normally build their nest in the crevice formed by loose bark or in a small hole in a tree. This bird box is designed to be put on the trunk of a tree and to mimic this situation.
If the hole in the tree or nest box is too large, then both male and female nuthatches may reduce its diameter by plastering mud around it.
